Description:
MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR Antique R. JOHNSON U.S. M1836 .54 Conversion Pistol

Likely Seeing Use into the CIVIL WAR

Here we present an antique Robert Johnson U.S. Model 1836 Percussion Conversion Pistol dated 1840 in Middletown, Connecticut. This .54 caliber smoothbore, percussion pistol would have started out life as a flintlock and converted when the more reliable percussion firing system was introduced and is one of approximately 18,000 Model 1836 pistols manufactured by Robert Johnson.

The Model 1836 was widely considered to be the best designed and manufactured flintlock pistol. The pistol has an 8 1/2-inch round barrel with a brass front sight blade, swivel ramrod with button head and iron mountings. The barrel, ramrod, butt cap, barrel band and trigger guard are "bright" finish. The lock plate, hammer, and tang were once casehardened. The right lock is marked "US / JOHNSON / MIDDN.CONN. / 1840". Inspection and proof marks “JH / P” are visible atop the barrel, for Federal Inspector Joseph Hannis. The Model 1836 Flintlock Pistol was the standard issue handgun of the Mexican-American War, and likely used well into the American Civil War after it was converted to percussion.

The overall condition is good. Crude conversion to percussion. Dark patina throughout. The action is strong. The bore is untouched and caked with dust and debris. The stock shows two ordnance inspector cartouches on the flat. The stock has several immobile cracks along the grain and is otherwise solid.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 8-1/2 inches.

Caliber: .54 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
