Description:
18th Century SCANDINAVIAN DOGLOCK Cavalry Carbine Saddle Ring .70 Antique

Early Flintlock Design with Half Cock Safety Hook

Here we present an antique Scandinavian Doglock Saddle Ring Cavalry Carbine, made circa 1781. We believe this military arm was made in Sweden or Norway. Though the doglock had been surpassed by the “true flintlock” by the 18th Century, Sweden and its neighbor Norway still preferred it and used it for their militaries. This would have seen potential use in the Theatre War between the Kingdom of Denmark (Norway) and Sweden (1788-89), Napoleonic Wars (c1803-1815) against the French, the Finnish War (1808-1809) against Russia the result of which was the ceding of Finland to the Russians, and the Swedish-Norwegian War of 1814.

This one features an 18 ½” smoothbore barrel in .70 caliber with a full-length stock, a nosecap type barrel band at the end, and a sling ring bar. There are small inspection markings throughout, and a date of “[17]81” on the left side of the breech.

The overall condition is very good. Original patina. The action is excellent and strong. The bore is smooth and patinated. The stock has a short, stable split on the left stock flat around one of the lock screws and is otherwise whole and solid. There is a crack through the front tang of the trigger guard where the screw inserts but it is immobile. Full-length muskets are quite scarce and carbines such as this are downright rare, especially in the US. A neat piece of Scandinavian military hardware from the late-18th Century!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 18-1/2 inches.

Caliber: .70 Flintlock

Overall condition as seen in photos.
