Description:
Antique COLT Pocket NAVY Cartridge Conversion .38 RF Revolver WILD WEST

One of 10,000 Cartridge Revolvers Manufactured

Here we present an antique Colt Pocket Navy Model Cartridge Conversion Revolver in .38 Rimfire, made circa 1873-75 in Hartford, Connecticut. There were somewhere around 10,000 of these made using existing percussion revolvers or parts and manufacturing new components to accept cartridges. The factory conversion of Colt’s percussion line coincided with the expiration of the S&W owned Rollin White Patent, from which Smith & Wesson benefitted greatly as they dominated the market for cartridge revolvers for over a decade. This one is the same size as the 1849 pocket and was probably partially assembled from Model 1849 parts. This revolver would have made an excellent companion for a civilian or lawman in the late 19th Century!

Though worn on this example, one of the most aesthetically pleasing aspects of this revolver is its cylinder scene. Cylinder scenes during this period were common, especially for Colt, not only for their visual appeal, but because it made a revolver more difficult to forge. The scene on the 1849 Pocket is that of a stagecoach robbery. The focal point is the stagecoach drawn by four horses. A woman in a dress is seen framed in the doorway of the side of the coach. The driver is standing alongside wielding his pistol against multiple assailants as the horses rear and struggle against their harnesses. Several of the bandits lay dying on the ground, one tries to control the horses, two are running away and one is in the process of falling dead after being shot. Not a bad way to show interested buyers what a pistol like this would be good for.

The overall condition is good. Strong action, although the cylinder does not index perfectly on all chambers. Good bore. Solid grip. Numbers match. Many markings are worn. Light remnants on the cylinder scene remain. Here is a scarce Colt revolver that would have been among their first cartridge revolvers!
