Description:
Antique British EAST INDIA COMPANY Marked “Model F” .75 PERCUSSION Musket

Percussion Musket w/EAST INDIA COMPANY Lion on Lock

Here we present an antique British East India Company marked Model “F” Percussion Musket, made circa the 1840s. Historical records indicate that the Honorable East India Company made no flintlock muskets after the 1820s and quickly took advantage of the newer and more reliable percussion firing system. In 1840 they began producing the world’s first mass produced percussion muskets, one which later became known as the Model “F”.
The 39” barrel Brown Bess musket was first developed and adopted by the East India Company in 1771, which was 25 years before the Board of Ordnance in London aligned with them with a 39” Brown Bess musket named the “India Pattern” in 1796. In 1839 the British government officially adopted converted percussion Brown Bess musket, the Pattern 1796-39, but in the Great Fire of the Tower of London in 1841, over 400,000 of these converted muskets were destroyed leaving the British military very low on muskets. The result was to copy the current EIC Percussion Musket, the Model “F”, and name it the “Lovell’s Pattern of 1842. By this time, the East India Company had already developed and refined the .75 bore percussion musket through six models, which were A through F. Models A and B were EIC flintlock muskets converted to percussion. However, the Model F was purpose built percussion military issue. These were built between 1845 and 1851.

The differences between the East India Company Models are for the most part minor. Models A and B were Brown Bess flintlock conversions, Model C and D were purpose built percussion muskets but had the "Old Series" side locks with differing trigger guard styles, while the Model E and F both had the "new series" side locks and had either the Hanoverian Catch on the Model E or the EIC bayonet catch on the Model F. This information was gathered from David Harding’s book “Smallarms of the East India Company 1600-1856” by Foresight Books in 1997.

The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore is in good shape for its age. This example sports a solid stock with an average amount of handling wear. Markings are legible. An EIC rampaging lion is engraved on the lock.
