Description:
ENGRAVED NICKEL & IVORY SMITH & WESSON .38 Single Action Revolver   Antique

Low 4-Digit Serial Number S&W Made Circa 1877

Here we present an antique Engraved Smith & Wesson .38 Single Action Revolver, the Successor to the Baby Russian”, made circa 1877 in Springfield, Massachusetts. This 5-shot revolver was a popular model in the 1870s and 80s, up until the time when double action revolvers took the lion’s share of the market for obvious reasons. During this time, S&W put out some nicely engraved guns. As they had for decades, German immigrants dominated the engraving niche in American gunmaking with Gustave Young and Cuno Helfricht being the master engravers at Colt and the family of the Ulrichs being the top engravers at Winchester. Louis Daniel Nimschke was a bit more of a free-lancer, engraving something over 5,000 firearms for many of the big names of the American firearms industry such as Colt, Henry, Winchester, Remington, Sharps, Smith & Wesson, Manhattan, Marlin, and Stevens, as well as engraving firearms for some enormous historical figures of the time to include Theodore Roosevelt, George Armstrong Custer, Buffalo Bill Cody, and Emperor Napoleon III. Each engraver had their own style and contribution.

This piece features floral scroll engraving on each of the larger side panels of the frame and each side of the barrel. The scrolls curl around each other with fully punchdotted interiors. Fine zig-zag lines surround the side panels and undulate under the cylinder as well as wave though and above the scrolls on the barrel. Intertwining zig-zags fill up each of the spaces between the flutes of the cylinder and envelope a deeper sunburst pattern at the front of each of the chambers. This same zig-zag line motif also provides some interest on the top near the barrel latch and on down the back of the grip frame.

The overall condition is fine. Original nickel and case color finish. Excellent action. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. The ivory grips are solid and in great shape. Numbers match.A very handsome single action Smith & Wesson from the late-19th Century!
