Birdseye Maple LONG RIFLE NICANOR KENDALL WINDSOR VERMONT Antique
With Large Fancy Brass Patchbox
Here we present an antique Half-Stock Long Rifle, made circa the mid-19th Century. This rifle is relatively short and light at only 43” overall, with a 27 ¾” octagonal barrel in .38 caliber, a 12 5/8” length of pull, and weight of 6.9 lbs. The stock is a beautiful bird’s eye maple with a large brass patchbox. The lock is by Nicanor Kendall of Windsor, VT. This rifle has a very small, faint maker’s mark on the top of the barrel that we cannot make out even under magnification, unfortunately.
This rifle has an oral history of having belonged to a Charles Fletcher of Illinois, who tragically perished by freezing to death on the plains in 1835. It was previously owned by C.W. Dowles of Waukegan, Illinois as early as 1952.
The overall condition is good. Original finish/patina. The action is strong. The bore is in very good condition with sharp rifling. The stock has gorgeous grain but the short grain is a bit less durable than wood with long, straight grain. This one has some minor, stable splits throughout, left stock flat has a crack, and the stock around the barrel wedge has been shored up with leather and cord as a non-invasive means to preserve the rifle. A very attractive rifle with some interesting provenance.
