Description:
When J. Stevens Arms and Tool Company introduced its revolutionary Model 325 hammerless boxlock in 1904, it was a game-changer.  With its one-piece cast-steel frame, it would dominate the American utility-double shotgun market for decades.  In 1906 a Model 325 12-gauge cost $20, about half the price of the least expensive Remington or L.C. Smith.  It was advertised by major sporting goods companies as having “high pressure steel barrels, choke-bored for nitro powder, matted extension rib, with reinforced breech, American-walnut pistol grip stock and patent snap fore-arms, checkered.” [For more information, see “A Hunter’s Guide to Early 20th-Century Affordable American Doubles” in the Sep/Oct 2021 Sporting Classics; also accessible on the Doublegun Preservation site under Education & Publications.]

This gun was made around  1905.  It is an early excellent example of a Model 325, and indeed of this entire class of utility shotguns.  The receiver, bottom metal, and barrels have been refinished using the traditional slow-rust-blue process.  The barrels are 28” long and have 2-1/2” chambers.  The right barrel is choked improved cylinder (.010) and the left is modified (.020).  The bore diameters measured at 9” from the breech are both .720, and the outside diameters at the muzzle are both .825.  The minimum wall thicknesses of both barrels are .031.  The bores are bright with no pitting.  The stock and forearm wood are made of grained American walnut.  Their original attractiveness and natural oils have been restored through the application of a hand-rubbed stock-oil finish.  The LOP is 14” to the end of a period recoil pad. The DAC is 1-3/4” and the DAH is 2-3/4”.  The cast is neutral.  The gun weighs 7 pounds 10 ounces.  Both triggers pull at 6 pounds of pressure.  The gun is on-face and locks up tightly.  All serial numbers, 9495, match.

The cost of shipping is not included in the listed price.  The inspection period is 7 days from receipt.  The gun has been fired on the range and in the field.  Nevertheless, as with all vintage shotguns, it is highly recommended that the new owner have it inspected by his or her own gunsmith before firing.
