Description:
SCARCE Antique CIVIL WAR Era JOSLYN ARMY Model .44 PERCUSSION Revolver

1 of only 3,000 Made in the Early 1860s

Here we present an antique rare Civil War Joslyn Army Model Percussion Revolver, made circa the early 1860s by the Joslyn Firearms Company of Stonington, Connecticut. Benjamin Joslyn patented this .44 caliber, 5 shot, side-hammer revolver in 1858. He initially contracted with W.C. Freeman to act as manufacturer and sales agent, but Freeman wasn’t able to actually fulfill the first 500-gun order received from the U.S. military.

After the contract was cancelled by the military, Joslyn brought manufacturing in-house, and proceeded to make between 2500 and 3000 of the guns to sell on the commercial market. About 1100 of these were purchased by various units of the Federal military, including 225 bought (and formally inspected and marked) by the US Navy. One of the few (if not the only) significant purchase of .44 caliber revolvers by the Navy. The guns did see combat at Shiloh and in other battles, but the records available show a generally poor reputation among troops. They were pulled from active service (due to complaints by soldiers) by early 1863 and were held in reserve at U.S. arsenals until the ending of the war.

The overall condition is very good. Cleaned with gray finish/patina. The action is excellent. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. The grips are solid. Numbers match throughout on the metal parts (538) such as the frame, cylinder, rammer parts, while the grips are numbered to a different Joslyn. A very nice example of a rare Civil War revolver!
