Description:
SCARCE Antique Belgian FALISSE & TRAPMANN Copy of SPENCER NEW MODEL SRC .52

BRAZILIAN CONTRACT Saddle Ring Carbine

Here we present an antique Belgian Falisse & Trapmann Copy of a Spencer New Model Saddle Ring Carbine manufactured circa 1873-74 in Liege, Belgium. Spencer rifles and carbines were popular with French troops during the 1870-71 Franco-Prussian War, with shipping records showing thousands of them being acquired for use. The Spencer became so popular that the private manufacturer Falisse & Trapmann of Liege, Belgium manufactured copies in 1873 and 1874 from a mixture of surplus and newly made parts. Falisse & Trapmann produced less than 1,000 of these carbines in 1873, believed to be exclusively for a Brazilian contract.

On this example, the Falisse & Trapmann “FT” proofs are seen on several parts throughout. It features fixed blade front and folding ladder rear sights. There is a saddle ring and bar on the left side of the stock wrist and is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a sling swivel. The left rear side of the barrel is marked with a Liege proof and the left side of the receiver is marked with a “crown/circled A” proofmark and the saddle ring bar plate has a “crown/circled B” proof. The normal “UNION ARMORIERE BELGE/LIEGE” marking on top of the receiver and the makers cartouche on the right of the buttstock are absent. The left side of the upper and lower breech block are correctly marked with the matching serial number “2027” which is repeated on the front of the receiver, the inside of the forearm, the bottom of the barrel, and the buttplate. “56/52/1866” is hand carved in the left side of the buttstock.

This is a great opportunity to own an extremely rare Belgium made copy of the iconic Spencer saddle ring carbine. With less that 1,000 of these manufactured, examples of this gun don’t come around very often.

The overall condition is fine. Original blue finish. The action is excellent. The bore is shiny bright with sharp rifling. The stock is in fine shape. A great piece!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 20 inches.

Caliber: .52 Rimfire
