Description:
Documented California Shipped Model 1873 Colt Single Action Army Revolver, Nickel Plated, .45 Cal, mfg. 1881 with 7 1/2" barrel. This is a good solid blackpowder frame Colt Single Action with a highly desirable Western shipping destination. California was was always at the forefront of the Western movement and this pistol was right there during the peak of the Wild West era. Overall the gun retains 5% original nickel finish predominantly on the hammer, recoil shields, and top of frame with traces visible around the front sight and breech, cylinder flutes, and gripstraps. The balance lightly browned at some point now thinning to gray. Original wood grips have been lightly sanded long ago and are very slightly undersized yet retain an attractive worn dark finish overall with rounding to all four lower corners. Clear three-line patent dates with original serial number "72977" stamped on frame, triggerguard, and backstrap. Barrel address is slightly worn at start but clear overall and fully legible. Original long knurled hammer, trigger, loading gate, full blade front sight, and ejector assembly with original brass spring and desirable early donut style head. Cylinder retaining pin screw may be replaced but all other screws appear original and the nickel plated pin itself may be a correct early replacement. The hammer sits low at the first safety click but otherwise the action is strong and crisp and functions wonderfully with four distinct clicks. Cylinder has typical slight play on lockup. Bore shows very strong sharp rifling front to back with light blackpowder frosting throughout and some moderate pinprick pitting scattered toward muzzle. A colt factory letter is included confirming the gun's original configuration as .45 caliber, barrel length not listed (standard 7 1/2"), nickel finish, stocks not listed (standard), shipped to N. Curry & Bros. San Francisco, California, October 28 1881. The Curry brothers were noted gunsmiths and arms retailers active in San Francisco throughout the mid to late 1800's. Nathaniel and his brother John inherited the business from their brother Charles upon his death in 1863 and continued business until 1886 when they sold the firm to Charles Ladd. A very nice and very rare authentic Western shipped Colt! Jeremiah Johnson Trading sells antique arms manufactured prior to 1899 and muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions only.
