Description:
CIVIL WAR South Carolina CONFEDERATE Antique PALMETTO ARMORY Rifled Musket

CIVIL WAR SOUTHERN SOLDIER Rifled MUSKET

Here we present an antique Palmetto Armory Percussion Model 1842 Pattern Rifled Musket, made in Columbia, South Carolina in 1852. The Palmetto Armory was a private manufacturing firm established in 1851 by William Glaze and Benjamin Flagg. In 1851, South Carolina contracted with the Palmetto Armory for weapons to arm the state militia. Included in the contract was an order for 6,000 percussion muskets. The .69 caliber Palmetto Musket was essentially a U.S. Model 1842 Percussion Musket made under contract by William Glaze at the Palmetto Armory in Columbia for the state of South Carolina. The bulk of them were assembled from surplus or rejected parts from the Springfield Armory. This example has “COLUMBIA/S.C. 1852” vertically marked at the tail of the stock and “PALMETTO ARMORY/S*C*” (very faint) in a circle around the palm tree marked at the center of the lock.

These muskets were purchased by South Carolina in anticipation of war with the North to arm the state militia during the secession crisis of the early 1850s. However, when a compromise in congress was reached over slavery issues, war was delayed for about another 10 years. Given the foresight, one could say these were the first Confederate weapons. Glaze's contract with South Carolina called for 1,000 Percussion Rifles, 6,000 Percussion Muskets, 1000 Dragoon Pistols, 2000 Dragoon Sabers, and 526 Artillery sabers. When war finally came a few years later in the Spring of 1861, these muskets were quickly pressed into service. Furthermore, during the first weeks of the Civil War, Glaze converted about 3700 of his originally smooth-bored 1842 Muskets he built in 1852 to rifles by boring them with 3 groove rifling and adding a fixed rear sight.  It is documented that Sherman's Army destroyed 1,740 .69 Caliber Muskets on February 17, 1865, after capturing the Old Citadel Arsenal in Columbia.  Some of which were certainly Palmetto muskets.

This one was shortened both in the barrel and the stock for use after the war as a shotgun. Ramrod tubes installed under the barrel.

The overall condition is good. Brown patina throughout. The action is strong. The bore is dim and smooth. The stock has a partially repaired split along the grain on the left side about 7 inches.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 33-3/4 inches.

Caliber: .69 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
