RARE Antique Manufacture FRANCAISE D’ARMES French MITRAILLEUSE PALM Pistol
Unique Pistol Design from the late 1800s
Here we present a rare antique Mitrailleuse Palm Pistol, made during its production run between 1893 and 1897 by Manufacture Francaise d’Armes de St. Etienne. The Mitrailleuse was a compact, squeeze-type palm pistol made for self-defense in late 19th Century France. The Mitrailleuse pistols (from “Grapeshot”) were manufactured by the above before being renamed “Le Gaulois” (native people of France as in the “Gauls”) in approximately 1897. The renamed model was manufactured until the second decade of the 20th century. The right side of the frame is marked “MANUFACTURE FRANCAISE/D’ARMES DE ST ETIENNE”, and the left side has a three position selector switch. “MITRAILLEUS” is marked on top of the barrel rib, followed by a serrated dust cover.
It holds 5 rounds of 8mm and is fired by squeezing the rear grip into the body of the gun. The design was successful, but short-lived as semi-automatic pistols became just as small, and perhaps more effective and reliable. This followed the same trend as other types of palm pistols of the period, such as the “Protector”, which also originated in France. Nevertheless, here is an oddity that will be the talking piece of your collection.
The overall condition is good. The action is excellent. The bore is in good condition with strong rifling. The grip on the back has a short crack at the top, otherwise solid. Numbers match. Gray patina throughout.
