Description:
RARE Antique LONDON PISTOL COMPANY .31 MANHATTAN Pocket Revolver

ENGRAVED w/STAGECOACH ROBBERY Cylinder Scene

Here we present an antique “London Pistol Company” Manhattan Arms Percussion Pocket Revolver, made circa 1858-62 in Newark, New Jersey. In essence, these are Manhattan manufactured firearms that were marked London Pistol Company and sold under this name. These tended to be factory “seconds”, examples with casting flaws and the like, but still functional weapons. In Waldo Nutter’s Manhattan Firearms book, he has an eight page chapter entitled “London Firearms Company” with a good deal of information about these guns. At the end of the chapter, he says “Despite the fact that London Pistol Company revolvers may have been considered as second quality arms by the Manhattan Company, we do not regard them as less desirable, from the collector’s viewpoint, than their alleged first quality cousins, the Manhattan .31 caliber revolvers. Instead, we consider the London Pistol arms to be more interesting and more desirable because of their rarity.”

Manhattan Fire Arms Co. was founded in 1856 specifically to capitalize on the soon to be expiring Colt patents in 1857. This strategy worked very well for the company and they began by making high quality and very close copies of both Colts and other popular pistols with expired patents. These revolvers greatly resemble the Colt Model 1849 Pocket and 1851 Navy revolvers. In fact, Manhattan’s copies of Colts were so close that Colt tried to kill their production with a lawsuit, even though their patent had expired.

Manhattan’s revolvers were very well received by the public. The company never received U.S. military contracts, except for a small delivery, most likely on the regimental level. Nevertheless, many Manhattan revolvers found themselves on smoky Civil War battlefields, purchased privately by officers and soldiers, and they were certainly in use at home. The war created a vast and unquenchable market for firearms of all types.

The overall condition is good. Gray patina. Clear stagecoach robbery cylinder scene, engravings and other markings. The top of the hammer has a small chip. The action (hammer/trigger) is functional but can be stubborn at times, the cylinder does not index reliably and can get locked in place. The bore is in good condition with good rifling. The grips are solid. A very attractive and rare piece!
