ENGRAVED Antique W & C SCOTT & SON 16 Gauge Side x Side HAMMERLESS Shotgun
BLOCK SAFETY with CRYSTAL INDICATORS
Here we present an antique engraved W. & C. Scott & Son Side by Side Double Barrel 16 Gauge Hammerless Shotgun, made in 1880 in Birmingham, England. This would likely have been exported from England to the United States with a thriving market for all sorts of firearms. As people moved West and settled in remote areas, hunting was especially important to put food on the table and for protecting the homestead. This would have been a good gun for fowl hunting.
The top of the barrel rib is marked “W & C. SCOTT & SON. MAKERS & PATENTEES, 10 GT CASTLE STREET REGENT CIRCLE LONDON.”, the bottom of both barrels is marked “27351” with a series of four British proof marks, and “16B NOT FOR BALL / 17M”. The left of the receiver is marked “W. & C. SCOTT & SON / PATENT / BLOCK-SAFETY / HAMMERLESS”. Each sideplate has a viewing window with the plate marked “Patent Crystal Indicator” underneath. Each lug of the water table has a crossed sword proof, the right also has the ovalled tower and flag W. & C. Scott proof, the left lug has a diamond marked “No. 761/ PATENT/ 464/”, “U.S.A. PAT / DEC.3-78”, “U.S.A. PAT. / MAY.6.79” and “27351”. The top of the lever is marked “PATENT”. The bottom tang is marked with the ovalled tower and flag W. & C. Scott proof and “27351”. The sideplates have decorative engraving and there is border engraving on the sideplates, receiver, guard, lever, fore end iron and barrels.
The overall condition is very good. Damascene pattern still remains visible on the barrels. The markings are clear. The cocked indicators are functional. The actions are excellent. The bores are bright and smooth. The numbers match. Birmingham proofs. The stock is in great shape.
