Description:
This is a 20 Bore percussion black powder (measures at 20 Gauge IC / Mod chokes) side by side fowler with very good to near excellent smooth bores. Marked "J.Eaton" on the barrel rib this was built by James Eaton of Concord, N.H.. He is listed in Logan's book as one of the recognized Underhammer gun makers of note and was known to produce many other types of firearms and also work on exisiting firearms primarily for conversions from flintlock to percussion. James Eaton began his Concord gun works in 1835 and stopped producing them in 1843 when his company was purchased by M.C. Cutchins and A.R. Crosby. In very good condition this example retains much of what looks like and original brown finish that has thinned in spots and toned to a plum-brown with some isolated spots of roughness and handling marks. The lightly engraved action is marked "London Warrented" and is mostly gray-brown. The walnut stock is solid with several repaired and stabilized cracks on the forearm. The German silver stock furniture is very typical of that used by Eaton with butt plate, trigger guard, and stock inlay all showing his simple embellishments along with two oval silver plates and silver stock ramrod thimble all in near excellent condition. The brass tip wood ramrod is present and appears original except for the brass wad pusher and rides in two brass ramrod thimbles. The action functions properly holding at half and full cock with replacement nipples. A great historic New Hampshire made gun that will look excellent on display. Antique.
