Description:

In 1878 the Japanese Navy took possession of the first order of New Model No. 3's. This revolver was part of the first Contract order for 230 units numbered in the 5550 serial number range sent to H. Ahrens of Yokohama, and were shipped during 1878.
The underside of the frame of this Japanese Navy Contract revolver  bears the Japanese Imperial Naval markings. The bottom of the frame, forward of the trigger-guard, is stamped with the Japanese Imperial Naval ownership mark of an anchor with wavy lines.
Fitted with a spur trigger guard and a lanyard ring.
Amazingly,  this revolver has ALL MATCHING...  SERIAL NUMBERS  on the butt, barrel, and barrel latch.

This revolver was captured by the Chinese during the FIRST Sino-Japanese War, as evidenced by the "capture markings" on the face plate, and later imported back into the United States.

THIS RARE SMITH & WESSON JAPANESE NAVAL CONTRACT NEW MODEL  is in .44 S&W Russian caliber, has a 7 inch solid rib barrel,  blue finish and Walnut grips.
Serial # 5562 retains 45% original Japanese Arsenal re-blue finish with thinning to brown on the balance. The grips show hard use but are very good with dings and scratches and some blemishes in the checkering. Mechanically excellent.
