Description:
MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR INSCRIPTION Antique W.L. Evans US NAVY M1826 Pistol

One of < 1,000 Made in VALLEY FORGE, PENNSYLVANIA

Here we present an antique W.L. Evans US Navy Model 1826 Pistol manufactured in 1831 in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. This pistol is one of fewer than 1,000 manufactured by Evans in 1830-31. These were identical to the Model 1826 manufactured by Simeon North. This US Navy sidearm would have started out life as a flintlock and converted to percussion when the more reliable firing system came about.

It is marked on top of the barrel “Sant Anna April 7, 1846”—a clear reference to the Mexican-American War, “JE” on the underside of the stock, and “1882” on the grip. The date given precedes the outbreak of the Mexican-American War by a matter of days. In fact, it was on this day that US troops began construction of Fort Brown on the northern side of the Rio Grande River in preparation for the coming war, in response to heightening tensions between the two nations as a result of Texas being annexed by the US. The US Navy played a major role in the conflict both on sea and on the “brown water” of inland rivers. The Pacific Squadron took over and administered California. Commodore Matthew Perry was able to use rivers from the Gulf Coast side to attack and capture strategic towns as well as capture and blockade supplies. Eventually, he and Commodore David Conner, in coordination with General Winfield Scott landed over 22,000 troops at Veracruz, the largest amphibious operation in history to that date.

The overall condition is good. Even patina throughout. The action is excellent. The bore is smooth and patinated. The stock is solid.
