Description:
BOSHIN WAR Period EUROPEAN-JAPANESE Import Saddle Ring Carbine .58 Caliber

With Extremely Long Dutch Type Saddle Ring Bar

Here we present an antique Japanese Imported Saddle Ring Carbine, made in early-19th Century Europe. This carbine closely resembles the Dutch Model 1825 Carbine, the French Models 1786 & AN9. It features .58 caliber bore in a nearly 24-inch barrel. The most unique aspect is the very long and curvaceous saddle ring bar, which does appear on the Dutch Model 1825 carbine. This carbine is marked with a silver inlay on the top of the barrel and has extensive writing on the right side of the stock.

This arm was used during Japan’s own civil wars as a result of the Meiji Restoration of centralized power to the emperor: the Boshin War (27 January 1868-27 June 1869), Saga Rebellion (16 February-9 April 1874) and the Satsuma Rebellion (also called the Seinan War, 29 January-24 September 1877). These conflicts were depicted famously The Last Samurai (2003). These events were, in many ways, the ultimate result of the Commodore Perry Expedition—the forcible opening of Japan to American (and world) trade. Many and various arms such as this came into the newly opened market as Japan raced to update their armaments. Just as during the American Civil War, European countries as well as the US were happy to trade off their obsolescent weapons.

Weathered and lightly pitted exterior. Excellent action. Peened nipple. The bore is untouched and caked with dust. The stock is solid, though it has a long, thin crack that is stable going from the butt plate to the wrist.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 23-3/4 inches.

Caliber: .58 Percussion
