Description:
STATE of NEW YORK Antique REMINGTON Rolling Block Model 1871 MILITIA Rifle

INDIAN WARS Rolling Block w/SAFTEY LOCKING Action

Here we present an antique State of New York Contract Remington Rolling Block Militia Rifle, made circa 1872 in Ilion, New York. The Remington Rolling Block rifle is a breech-loading rifle that was produced from the mid-1860s into the early 20th century by E. Remington and Sons (later Remington Arms Company). The Remington .50-70 caliber rolling block was the U.S. Army's first official cartridge rifle and among the few contenders that easily made the jump from rimfire to centerfire rounds.

The state of New York held its own trials to replace its National Guard’s muzzleloaders. After briefly considering conversion methods, the state went with Remington-made .50-70 rolling blocks. After all, Remington was a home-state arms maker. It didn’t hurt that Remington willingly took many of the state’s muzzleloaders in trade.

New York bought 19,450 rifles in two orders, with the first order being for 15,000 to be delivered in 1872 and a second order for 4,500 rifles ordered in 1873. These can be distinguished by the extremely high curved hammer spur, the thumb lever for the breechblock that protrudes outward instead of up and the safety locking action which automatically returns the hammer to half cock when the breech is closed. They used the standard Remington military round top, rolling block action in .50-70 Center Fire caliber. The upper tang has the standard three-line Remington address/patent dates. The Remington Rolling Block would serve New York until the 1890s, and sources indicate these rolling blocks served with New York Militiamen deployed out West during the Indian Wars.
The overall condition is good. Strong action. Stretched hammer spur. The bore is dim. This example sports a solid stock with an expected amount of wear. Legible markings.
