1st MASSACHUSETTS VOLUNTEERS – 113 Marked
Here we present an antique British Percussion Enfield Pattern 1853 Artillery Carbine Musket made in 1862 likely in Birmingham, England. This example is marked 1/MA/V/113, which is likely for the 1st Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. The 1st Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry was an infantry regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. It was the first regiment to leave Massachusetts for a three-year term in response to President Abraham Lincoln’s May 3, 1861, call for three-year regiments. It was also the first three-year regiment from any state to reach Washington, D.C. for federal service.
This pattern carbine was used by the British Military between 1856 into the 1870's. This is a rare, original example of the British 1853 Pattern 2-band Percussion Artillery Carbine. The P1853 was the British Military Ordnance Board’s choice for adoption as the primary long arm in 1853. It was considered the apex European military gun of that time, introduced by the British War Department after several studies to improve the calibers and the dimensions of the previous models. However, it kept the same general appearance of the earlier pattern 1851.
The Enfield 1853 muskets were used by both the North and the South in the American Civil War. It was the second most widely used infantry weapon in the war, surpassed only by the Springfield Model 1861 Rifled Musket. The Confederates imported more Enfields during the course of the war than any other small arm, buying from private contractors and gun runners. It has been estimated that over 900,000 P1853 Enfields were imported into America and saw service in every major engagement of the war.
The overall condition is good. Robust action. The bore is in very good shape for its age. Solid stock overall, with a seemingly professionally repaired wrist. Legible markings. “1862” dated lock. A liege proof is present on the left barrel flat. Nice brown patina. This is a historic example of one of the most prevalent import muskets of the American Civil War used by both combatants!
