Description:
ROYAL LANCASTER VOLUNTEERS Antique SPENCER FLINTLOCK Officer’s Pistol .56

Handsome London Proofed Fighting Pistol with Inscription!

Here we present an antique Brass Barreled Flintlock Officer’s Pistol by Spencer, Marked for a Lieutenant Bonney of the R.L.V., made circa the 18th Century in London. This is a nicely sized pistol for the belt made almost entirely of brass that would resist corrosion from weather or salt water. It is in .56 caliber.

The left rear lock screw escutcheon on this flintlock is period inscribed “Lieut. Bonney, R.L.V.”, for the Royal Lancaster Volunteers (raised circa 1795 as the Loyal Lancaster Volunteers and transitioning to Royal Lancaster Volunteers circa 1797). They were known to use this abbreviation on their colors and possibly even on the buttons of their uniforms. Speaking of colors, we found that a sermon was delivered by the Reverend John Widditt, Vicar of Lancashire, at the ceremony of the presentation of their colors and was subsequently printed. The lock is signed “Spencer” in script. The top of the barrel is engraved with “London” also in script. Circa 1740-1813 London proof marks on the left side of the barrel. Delicate, neat engraving on the lock, barrel, and tang, as well as the trigger guard with finial and side plate hardware. Brass hardware throughout. Faceted pistol grip.

The overall condition is fine. The action is excellent and throws sparks very well. The bore is smooth and patinaed. The stock is smooth and solid with some signs of use. There is a thin sliver absent from the fore stock along the barrel. This is a very well-preserved 18th Century English flintlock pistol by Spencer!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 8 inches.

Caliber: .56 Flintlock

Overall condition as seen in photos.
