Description:
.85 Caliber RAMPART RIFLE Antique FRENCH MAUBEUGE ARSENAL Percussion c1851

Used on Fort Walls for Anti-Personnel

Here we present an antique French Maubeuge Arsenal Percussion Rampart Rifle, made at the armory at Maubeuge circa the 1850s. It was mainly used from ramparts as a defense weapon against besiegers attempting to overrun an area protected by a wall. It was a cross-over between a musket and a cannon and was deployed as a light artillery weapon. With a larger projectile and more powder and something to rest it on this was something that could better take down rows of men or even a horse.

The first French rampart rifle was the Model 1828 and was used during the Algerian campaign, particularly against Fort l’Empereur. The Model 1828 was modified into the Model 1831 and was used in 1832 against the citadel of Antwerp, and in 1837 during the siege of Constantine. This gun had a range is 600 meters. At a range of 100 meters, the bullet could penetrate 10 pine tree wood boards and two boards at distance of 600 meters. Because of this capability, this weapon made it possible to eliminate targets categorized as “priority”, such as soldiers manning artillery pieces and officers, who were positioned beyond the reach of standard muskets.

The overall condition is very good. Original finish/patina. The markings are clear. The action is excellent. The bore is in very good condition with strong rifling. The stock is solid with clear inspection markings. A scarce French musket in great shape!
