Commercial Pattern 1853 by Barnett of London, Blockade Runner
Here we present an antique Commercial Enfield Pattern 1853 Rifle Musket by Barnett of London, made circa 1861. Barnett supplied many of the CSA’s primary infantry musket, the P1853. This one bears the “CH/1” circled Confederate inspection marking on the heel of the comb. The left stock flat bears “XXIII TX” for the Texas 23rd Cavalry Regiment. The regiment was formed during the spring of 1862 with men from Centerville, Denton, Cooper, Palestine, Clarksville, Bowie, and Hopkins counties. It was assigned to H. Bee’s and Debray’s Brigade, Trans-Mississippi Department, and fought in various conflicts in Louisiana. In January 1864, the unit contained 33 officers and 451 men, and later took an active part in the engagements at Mansfield and Pleasant Hill. It was included in the surrender in June of 1865 at Appomattox. The field officers were Colonel Nicholas C. Gould, Lieutenant Colonels J.A. Corley and Isaac A. Grant, and William R. Caton.
The Pattern 1853 was Britain’s adopted rifle from 1853 until the Snider system was adopted to transform arms into breech-loaders. In addition to its use around the world with the British military, this was one of the most popular arms for the infantry during the American Civil War. The Pattern 1853 rifle-musket was used by both the North and the South in the American Civil War and was the second most widely used infantry weapon in the war, surpassed only by the Springfield Model 1861 Rifled Musket. The Confederates imported more Enfields during the course of the war than any other small arm, buying from private contractors and gun runners. It has been estimated that over 900,000 P53 Enfields were imported into America and saw service in every major engagement of the war.
The overall condition is good. Gray patina throughout. The action is strong. The bore is dim with thin rifling and some pitting near the muzzle. The rear sight and the middle barrel band have been lost. The stock shows a clear Confederate inspection mark on the rear of the stock’s comb and the soldier graffiti for the Texas unit; overall shows use and remains solid.
