Description:
This is a rare Good++ condition Confederate Type IV Fayetteville rifle dated 1864, .58 caliber, 33" barrel. Action is very tight at half and full cock. Some pitting at breech block and nipple. Barrel is brown patina, smooth overall except for some superficial striations at barrel end on one side (see photo). Stamped "1864", "CSA" with eagle motif, and "Fayetteville" on the lockplate--all very sharp. Proper VP eagle motif proof marks on barrel. "CSA" is very sharp on the tang of the buttplate. It has a fairly clear cartouche (photo). The rear sight was removed (photo). The two barrel bands are sharply stamped with the U. The photos show the flaws, dings, and damage to the wood, including what appears to be a period set of initials and some likely use-related wear and damage. Overall in Good++ condition and all original other than ramrod (commonly field replaced). This is a very nice example of an iconic Confederate firearm made at the Fayetteville Arsenal in North Carolina after the capture of the Harper's Ferry Arsenal in 1861. The Type IV rifles numbered about 5000, made up until Sherman's capture of the Fayetteville Arsenal in March 1865.
