REMINGTON Antique SWEDISH CONTRACT M1867 ROLLING BLOCK Military Rifle
1 of 10,000 Made by Remington for Sweden
Description: REMINGTON Antique SWEDISH CONTRACT M1867 ROLLING BLOCK Military Rifle 1 of 10,000 Made by Remington for Sweden Here we present an antique Remington Swedish Contract Model 1867 Rolling Block Rifle, made circa 1868 in Ilion, New York. The Remington M1867 was the first rifle using metallic cartridges to be adopted by the Norwegian and Swedish armies. 10,000 complete new Model 1867 Remington built rifles were contracted for in 1867 as well as 20,000 Remington actions, which Sweden wanted in order to assemble its own additional newly-built rifles. While Sweden was later to convert many of its muzzleloaders and chamberloaders to the Remington system, all of these were built on locally produced receivers. The 20,000 Remington actions were all used for the manufacture of new-built rifles at both the Carl Gustaf stads and Husqvarna Gevärsfaktoris. With the exception of the first 10,000 rifles, which were made by Remington in the United States, all Remington Model 1867 rifles and carbines were made under license in Norway and Sweden, by Kongsberg Vaapenfabrik in Norway, and by Husqvarna Vapenfabriks Aktiebolag and Carl Gustafs stads Gevärsfaktori in Sweden with the two Swedish manufacturers producing about 80% of the weapons. This example is one of the first 10,000 that Remington produced in Ilion, NY. In the 1860s the Norwegian and Swedish armies realized that their standard rifles, both percussion lock breech-loading rifles and muzzle loaders, were rapidly becoming obsolete in the face of the new metal cartridge combining bullet, primer and propellant load. In early October 1866, a joint Swedish-Norwegian arms commission was established in order to select a suitable cartridge and rifle for the two nations. After various tests, including repeated firings, it was clear that the needle guns and the repeating rifles were not particularly well-suited and were dropped from further testing. Further testing showed that both the Peabody and the Remington were suitable for issuing to the field army. In the end, the commission based their decision on price and complexity. The Remington totaled a mere 25 parts to the Peabody's 37, and it was approved for use by both the Norwegian and the Swedish armed forces, as their standard military rifle, on November 22, 1867. About 200,000-220,000 military rifles and 7,000 military carbines using the Model 1867 action were manufactured as complete weapons in Sweden, 100,000-120,000 rifles and 4,000 carbines by Carl Gustafs Stads Gevärsfaktori (a government owned arsenal) and 100,000 rifles and 3,000 carbines by Husqvarna Vapenfabriks Aktiebolag. In addition to that, the above mentioned 10,000 complete rifles and 20,000 actions made in the U.S. were bought from Remington. The overall condition is very good. Original blue finish. This was remodeled from a military rifle. The barrel was shortened, the sights changed, sling swivels installed and the forearm reshaped to be a more practical hunting arm. The action is excellent. The bore is bright with strong rifling. Solid stock. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 29-3/8 inches. Caliber: .50 Centerfire (12.17x42mm) Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
