Description:
BRITISH Antique BRANDER BRASS BARREL .63 FLINTLOCK Pistol England Colonial

Pre-1813 “LONDON” Marked and Proofed Pistol

Here we present an antique Martin Brander English Brass Barrel Flintlock Pistol, made circa the late 1700s to early 1800s in London, England. Martin Brander, son of William Brander, was elected Master of the “Gun Maker’s Company” in 1792 and 1807. He joined the “Honorable Artillery Company” in 1781 and was “Contractor to Ordnance” from 1798 to 1820, and to the East India Company between 1791 to 1826. He was in partnership with Thomas Potts between 1802 until his death in 1827.

Then as now, rifles and muskets were the primary arm of the day, useful for everything from hunting to combat. Pistols were certainly not as numerous but still very useful for combat since most firearms at this time were limited to a single shot. Imagine if one discharged their single shot firearm only to miss or have another enemy close the distance. A man expecting trouble might carry as many pistols on his person as he could. According to some estimates, European rifles were made at a ratio of 250:1 over pistols, making these rare and highly coveted.

The overall condition is near fine. The action is excellent. The smooth bore is in great shape. The stock and grip remain solid with average wear. Stock has been shortened, likely due to period damage. A small chip is missing in front of the lock. Clear markings including pre-1813 London Proofs.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 7-3/4 inches.

Caliber: .63 Flintlock
