Description:
This is a small WWII Japanese National "Hinomaru" flag, often referred to as a meatball. The flag is silk, approximately 11” square, with a 6" painted red circle in the center. It is stitched around the edges. There are no ties at the corners with which to fasten it to a pole. The flag appears too fragile to have been flown outside. It may have been a home display in support of the Japanese war effort or a good luck flag, which were often carried by Japanese soldiers into combat. The flag is in excellent condition, with no tears or holes and has excellent color. Due to its age, there is some slight discoloration along the edges.
I purchased the flag from a reputable dealer who acquired it in a private collection of items that belonged to a WWII US Veteran. For display purposes, I put the flag in a black wooden glassed frame that measures 13” square. This flag displays very nicely, especially if one doesn't have a lot of space. The sale of the flag includes the frame.
