Description:
Antique 1879 French bayonet, long bladed for the French fossil model 1874 Gras rifle. The T shaped spine is marked M're d'arms de Etienne 1879, indicating original manufacture at the arsenal in Etienne. The wood handle is nicely worn and the brass pommel has a yellow green patina. The cross piece bears 3 proof marks on one side and 1 proof mark on the other. The serial number 36009. Number 58 on bottom next to muzzle ring and a proof mark toward the quilling. The blade has 2 proof marks next to the cross piece. Scabbard bears matching 86009 and a proof mark. There is a m1842 transitional leather bayonet frog.
