Description: Winchester Model 1866 Saddle Ring Carbine. 20" barrel, .44 CF, Manufactured 1866, NSN. Classic carbine length round barrel with full length magazine tube retained by a pair of barrel bands, 2-line address, and blade front sight. The rear sight dovetail has been filled in and the ladder sight moved back onto the receiver. As is was commonly done in the period, bolt has been modified to fire centerfire ammunition. Iconic brass 2nd model carbine receiver with iron saddle ring. Lower tang appears to be a replacement, expertly refitted. Standard walnut forend. Early contour walnut buttstock, likely a correct replacement. Brass crescent butt plate with tool trap, numbered "9502" on the underside. Barrel exhibits a pleasant chocolate patina, the address somewhat faint. Receiver exhibits a very attractive dark bronze patina with some areas darkened and scattered dings and wear. Forend shows heavy wear. The stock shows somewhat less wear with scattered dings and splits at the wrist. Bore retains defined rifling with heavy frosting. Mechanically fine.
