Offered here as a new addition is a RARE U.S. Model 1900 “American Eagle” luger. This is a solid representative example of an original 1900 DWM "American Eagle" Test Luger as developed and sold to the U.S. Government after the turn of the century for U.S. test trials. In April 1900 the Ordnance Board authorized an order for 1,000 DWM Model 1900 Luger pistols, which were delivered in two separate lots; approximately 800 on 26 October 1901 and the remaining 200 on 29 October 1901. The first lot of serial numbers were in the 6100-7100 range, with the second lot in the 7200 serial number range. These early American Eagle Test Lugers were made expressly for the U.S. military when they were interested in the Luger as a replacement for the .38 caliber revolvers that were in service in the late 1890s and early 1900s. The three most distinguishing features noted on all these Lugers were 1) there were no German acceptance proofmarks, 2) they lacked the typical "Germany" export markings usually found on the front of the frame or under the barrel and 3) the last two digits of the serial number was stamped on the rounded portion of the opposite side of the takedown lever. The pistol has the prewar blued finish with the safety, trigger, takedown lever and ejector having a straw color. Dish shaped toggle and grip safety indicative of this model. This specimen was acquired decades ago from the Remington Arms Co. in Bridgeport, CT . It has a serial number 7712 on all parts (which is slightly outside the "Test Trial" range. All matching with the exception of the takedown plate and rounded portion at rear receiver. Those two numbers are “96”. .30 caliber (or 7.65mm). The trigger guard also stamped in block letters “SU” which may have been applied when it came to the United States. Our research into Model 1900 markings show variations of markings with “S” AND “SU” markings. The one we have found that closely resemble the stamping on this specimen is noted as “GOTHIC-DWM parts transferred to Mauser”. We assume if correct that this would be a transition period where parts were transferred from the DWM conglomerate to Mauser. There is also a small "BD" stamped on the barrel. MUCH ORIGINAL STRAW REMAINS AS WELL AS 80-85% BLUE. Note: Pistol comes with a SCARCE standard unmarked magazine with plain wooden thumbpiece (NOT SHOWN IN IMAGES). A RARE American Eagle luger . NOTE: Winning will receive a documentation letter from us attesting to its acquisition from Remington. Thanks for your bid.
