Description: This is a Model 1842 Springfield musket that has been cut down and its front, double strap band moved back to accommodate its 26” barrel. The entire barrel has been tapered and the bayonet lug relocated to accommodate the socket bayonet. The original ramrod has been shortened accordingly with the end rethreaded. Very nice lock is dated 1848 and has a clear eagle and “Springfield”. Lock mechanics are crisp. This is a very nice example of a Confederate repaired arm. Thousands of battlefield pickups were sent back to the local arsenals to be repaired or scrapped for parts. Guns with barrels that were damaged on the ends were cut back to carbine or musketoon length. The sling swivels were removed and bayonet lugs were relocated and the “new” guns were reissued. This particular alteration is a product of the Macon, Georgia arsenal and is addressed on pages 442-446 of Confederate Rifles and Muskets by Murphy and Madaus and as they were known to have shortened and altered many Model 1842’s. This is the most inexpensive Confederate arm you can purchase. PAYMENT OPTIONS: Payment is expected within 10 days of ending. I only accept postal money orders, cashier’s checks and personal checks.
