Description:
Scarce/Rare Sharps Pistol Rifle-Carbine. Limited quantity to approximately 600. Manufactured mid-late 1850's. .38 caliber, 24 3/4" barrel.. This is not only a scarce and rare Sharps firearm, but in exceptional condition overall. The barrel retains .100% of its original plum-brown finish. Falling block action, the bore shinny and mirror-bright exhibiting sharp and crisp rifling. Sharps only manufactured approximately 600 of these unusual “pistol-rifles” or "pistol carbine" using the same action as the Sharps Breech-Loading Single Shot Pistol. The trigger guard acts as the lever for the falling block action. When dropped, the breech end of the barrel opens to give access to the chamber, where a paper cartridge may be loaded. The receiver lever and hammer have a casehardened finish. The rifle has a walnut forend and pistol grip stock. This one is serial numbered "442" on the tang, as well as penciled on the inside of the patchbox. "C. SHARPS & CO'S/PHILA. PA" is roll-stamped on the left side of the receiver. Original barrel sight. The wood overall is very good+ retaining most of its original varnish finish. A few areas with surface wear and dings from age handling. Pistol-Rifles were produced in very small numbers, thus being quite scarce. This is a rare chance to fill a niche in a Sharps collection or simply to own one of the rarest of all Sharps’ firearms. The overall condition is Fine+. The action is strong and crisp. An extraordinary piece that will only become more and more difficult to find.
