Made at a time (pre 1930) when travel to the big woods was considerably more difficult (my neighbor growing up used to be taken into camp on a wagon pulled by oxen) takedowns were not just a luxury and we simply love takedowns and love good vintage 99's. In the definitive book on 99's Murray refers to the G's as "probably the most attractive of 99 Rifles" This gun is in good but not perfect condition reflecting honest use and care for the last nearly 100 years. There were two versions, this is the earlier of the two distinguished by the front sight which is integral with the barrel. Other features shared by many of the earlier and some later guns are the clever brass loader, cocking indicator and cartridge counter on the left side of the receiver. This gun retains most of the original blue. There are two very small holes where someon had screed something into the forend and a small repair (both of these could easily be touched up and made invisible with a little work. Some finish has been addded to the stock ...possibly refinished...the gun is not giving up its secrets so we don't know.
Chambered in 300 Savage which when deisgned was intened to produce 30 06 or near so ballistics in the terrific 99 Savage Rifle. For those who do not know in factory loadings it is just a little under the 308 Winchester and with handloads is the equivalent.
Bore is mirror, a folding rear site has been added in the factory dovetail and an excellen Lyman Peep (made just a half hr from our location) is intalled in the factory holes on the tang.
It does NOT have the crack behind upper tang found so often on 99's
