Description:
A hard to find Marlin Ballard .22 Rimfire with Double-Set Triggers. It Chambers .22 Long Rifle, Longs & Shorts; Serial Number 16,8XX; with Full Octagon Barrel; Untapered (approximately) 28 Inches Long x 7/8 Inch across the Flats. It has a V-Notch Rear Sight; Vintage, Drift-Adjustable Hooded Fine Bead Front Sight, and Two Dovetail Scope Blocks. The High-Grade Wood is Fancy-Shaped with a Swiss-German Style Cheekpiece; Carved with Heraldic/Fleur-de-Lis designs; and further embellished with what looks like a German Silver Monogram Inlay on the Schnabel Tip Forend. A Heart-Shaped Carving on it’s underside. A modern brass spacer and black rubber buttplate are in place. Wood appears to have been crafted by a talented amateur. The left side of the receiver is marked in three lines “J.M. MARLIN. NEW-HAVEN CONN. U.S.A. / PATENTED. FEBRUARY 9. 1875. / BALLARD’S. PATENT NOV. 5. 1861” (with the “1” almost worn away). The bore looks quite nice with well-preserved rifling. The Case Colors and Blue Finish appear original (we cannot be sure) with well over 90-plus Percent of the finish intact. Unlike most Ballards, the Lever is Tight and does not hang down with gravity. The wood carries some dings, scrapes & chips; and there is an (approximately) 1-inch long, thin crack at the top of the wrist on the right side; and another slightly wider lazy-L shaped crack in the center of the wrist on the left side.
