The original SIG P210, aka Pistole 49 or P49, was designed to replace the Swiss Army’s then standard issue sidearm, the Luger pistol (Parabellum 06/29). A refinement of the Petter-Browning patent (Browning meaning the famous John Moses Browning), the pistol shared many similarities to the French Modèle 1935, upon which the pistol was mostly based, but also had similarities to the Browning Hi Power and the Luger that the P210 replaced in Swiss Army service. Taking a cue from the Luger’s design, the P210 featured a slide that rested within the frame rather than on top of it as with the 1911. This feature would later be adopted by the famous CZ 75 as well. Prototypes for the new pistol began a testing phase from 1942 to 1944. The final design was ready by 1947 and was accepted for service use by the Danish army in October of 1948 as the P49. In keeping with traditional Germanic engineering, the P210 featured extremely tight tolerances. The parts were all hand lapped making each piece perfectly fit the pistol. The result was that the P210 possessed target-grade accuracy for a pistol that was intended only for “military use”. In European terms, “military use” usually means the pistol sits in its holster 98 percent of the time and looks pretty, with occasional practice shooting. As a result, when the original P210s were sold to the US as surplus, the majority were in excellent to like new condition, many of them being sold with the original holster. The Danish army also adopted the pistol as the “Pistol M/1949” although the pistols themselves were stamped “9mm P m/49.” To many in the Danish army, the pistol was simply known as the “Neuhausen,” after the town in which SIG is located. To collectors, the pistol is sometimes referred to as the P210-DK. It should be noted that in this case, the manufacturer’s name is given as “SIG” and not Sig Sauer. The latter name did not exist at the time as it was not until the 1970s that SIG purchased J.P. Sauer und Sohn to form today’s Sig Sauer. SIG is an acronym for Schweizerische Industrie Gesellschaft, which is German for Swiss Industrial Company. The pistol shown here is one of the Danish army pistols and comes with the original box used when the pistol was sold on the U.S. market. Curiously, there are no import stamps visible anywhere on the gun. The pistol is from the first production block, which was delivered between 1948 and 1951, and consisted of serial numbers 0001 to 16,607. The pistols featured a polished blue finish a set of horizontally grooved wood grips. The “HTK” stamp on the left hand side indicates delivery of the pistol to the Haerens Tekniske Korps or the Danish Army Technical Corps, who were the first part of the Danish army to be issued the new pistol. The bluing of this this example is in superb condition. There is some very light wear to the left upper edge of the frame at the top. There is a spot of the bottom of the slide where the bluing is not as “thick” or “deep” as it is elsewhere. Finally, there is a small thin "safety line" where the safety moves between the safe and fire positions. The only visible issue with the grips is that the right grip panel exhibits some of the foam residue from the box. Unsurprisingly, the foam in the box has deteriorated. While the lower foam piece is still present, the upper foam is no longer present inside the lid of the box for the most part. Getting back to the pistol, the magazine release is very tight suggesting not many magazines have been dropped from the mag well over the course of the pistol’s lifetime. Spring tension on the follower, and therefore, upon the slide stop is strong. The slide-frame interaction is exceptionally smooth as expected. The trigger pull is superb, with a clear take up and crisp break. The bore is exceptionally bright and gives the impression of having just left the factory yesterday. Overall, this pistol is a very nice collector’s piece.
