It is in .44 WCF (Colt Frontier Six Shooter) caliber with 7.5” barrel, blue and case, with one piece wood grips. This gun originally had “COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER” acid etched on the left side of the barrel but it has worn off. It is in very good mechanical condition with four clicks and three stops, reasonable lock up for its age and has a good, but evenly shallowly corroded black powder bore (probably a 7 out of 10), with strong rifling. It shows overall light pitting and patina with little or no original finish. It has no deep scratches or dings and the grips (original and numbered to the gun) retain about 75% of their original varnish. The butt has an “H” carved on the left side. The holster has the initials “PRH” carved in the top loop. The serial numbers all match (frame, trigger guard, butt strap, barrel and cylinder) and the assembly number “744” appears on the loading gate and frame. Further, the initials “D.F.C.” for David F. Clark, Government inspector, appear on the frame, an “H” in the hammer slot, an “L” on the rear face of the cylinder, and “G” below the serial number on both the trigger guard and butt. The “DFC” inspector mark tells us (according to Kopec) that this frame was one of the very few government contract overruns. It was fully ordnance inspected and was an “extra” in the production of parts for an early government contract. Since it was not ultimately needed to finish the contract, it was used on a civilian commercial model. These “overrun” frames are very rare. The holster housing this Colt is a hand-made, heavy leather, double Mexican loop, lined, leather laced and floral carved - fairly old piece.
