Description: The AK-47 is perhaps the world’s most famous rifle and has seen use all over the world from the deserts and mountains of the Middle East to the valleys and jungles of South America. Naturally, given its history, it is usually associated with communism, guerilla warfare, and revolution. However, the AK and its derivatives have seen use with non-communist or even NATO forces as well. For example, both the AK-74 and AKS-74U are currently in use by Ukrainian ground forces in defending their homeland from invasion by the Russian Federation, with all the irony that entails. The AK design has proven itself in countless conflicts and is well known for its simplicity, ease of use, and reliability under the worst conditions. This semi-auto only example is one of the famous Saiga rifles, in this case the Saiga 223, chambered for the classic .223 Remington. It has been modified with a Phoenix Technologies Kicklite stock, which features a one-piece stock and pistol grip which gives the appearance of the rifle having a separate pistol grip and stock like most AK rifles. The rifle retains the original extended-length polymer fore end. The rifle’s muzzle/front sight assembly has not been replaced either. The mag well uses standard AK dimensions. As far as I have been able to determine, the new PSA “AK-1074” mags for the 5.56/.223 will require some filing to be done before they will fit this rifle; afterwards they should fit just fine. The rifle is used but remains in excellent condition. The bore is fairly clean. There is some wear of the finish, mainly on the right hand side of the receiver, as well as the very tip of the bolt handle. Overall, the Saiga 223, despite its odd appearance compared to a regular AK, is still a Kalashnikov where it counts most – reliability. Saiga rifles can match virtually anything as far as reliability is concerned. It will eat just about any ammo you can feed into it. I am not entirely certain as to the rate of twist on this barrel. Production was not necessarily consistent, with different owners reporting their Saiga 223 as having a 1:9.5, 1:9, or 1:7 twist. At the time of writing, it is suspected that this rifle has a 1:9.5 twist, but I am not 100% certain. Another factor in the Saiga 223s’ favor is that most of the parts are interchangeable with any other AK. For example, the current safety could be replaced by none featuring a bolt hold open notch like those on Century Arms AK rifles. There is no factory box, but the rifle does come with a soft case.
