The overall length is approximately 39¾" The round .577 caliber barrel has a poor bore. The barrel has wrench marks and light Birmingham proofs at the breech. All metal has a heavy brown patina. The lock is marked “Tower/ 1861" in the center, the tail has a crown. The brass nose cap, trigger guard, and butt plate are very good. The stock is good with an age crack near the toe and another at the rear of the lock. A brass crack repair at the left flat rear lock screw has the look of southern work. In addition, the stock area next to the hammer is missing and is protected by a nailed-on leather flap. The action functions correctly. At first glance, this appears to be an Enfield Artillery carbine. However, the barrel length is incorrect and there is no sling swivel on the butt (while one is on the trigger guard). The nipple protector is present (with replace chain). The left butt has what appears to have a “TK" carved in it worthy of further research. The date, alterations, condition, and repairs make us believe this most likely was a gun used by the South. (DALLAS LOCATION) Price: $2,495.00 Antique: Yes |
