Stands of grape shot typically consisted of 2 iron plates, 9 iron shot, a center bolt and 2 iron rings. The army shot were arranged in 3 layers, with the bolt and rings holding the layers of shot together. This shot was for a 7" bore, 42 pound cannon with a typical diameter of 3.13-3.17 inch. This example is 3.16" and 3.11 at the smallest with a weight of 4 lbs 8.3 oz. The casting of the shot was not a well done as a cannonball and that shows with this shot having rough casting and a band that circles the middle. Interesting piece of history and as rare as any cannonball. Price: $195.00 |
