Heavy frontier single shot rifle, 30” octagon barrel measuring 1.22” across flats at breech, 1.06” at muzzle. Edges of octagon barrel are slightly larger than the receiver, muzzle has Remington crown. Tight action, a .45-70 cartridge chambers and extracts as expected, bore is excellent for an original, unlined 1880s BP big bore rifle, bore slug .458 groove-to-groove, some scattered light surface roughness towards breech, bore overall ~ 8 of 10. Fine Remington markings on the barrel with patent dates correctly stamped on the lower left side of the receiver. Serial number matching at six locations: bottom tang, bottom flat of barrel under forearm, butt plate, butt stock, forearm, forearm cap, see pictures. Correct 45.70 stamp on bottom flat of barrel ahead of the forearm. Receiver assembly numbers 3756 matching. Original Remington rear sight type 2, front sight is a small blade. Correct metal forearm cap. Receiver is mostly mottled gray with some case color under the side lever, tight action, dark aged blue on barrel flats with the balance gray/brown, some scattered nicks. Wood is a pleasing dark walnut with oil finish, numerous nicks and dings but not beat up, factory original checkering on pistol grip is good but worn, wood has been sanded. Butt stock is solid with tight, hairline cracks at top and bottom tangs, see pictures. Wood to metal fit is better at receiver sides, not so good at tangs, see pictures. Combination of hairline cracks at tangs and variable wood to metal fit at wrist indicative of repair/restoration, see pictures. Big bore heavy barrel Remington Hepburns (and Winchester highwalls) are among the more rare of the "buffalo rifle" genre. Its a matter of history and production numbers. Bison (American buffalo) were approaching extinction by the mid-1880s. Remington started producing the Hepburn in 1883 (Winchester started producing highwalls in 1885). By contrast, Remington started producing the Model 1 Rolling Block Sporting Rifle in the late 1860s, Sharps began producing the 1874 Sporting Rifle in 1871. Sharps & Rolling Blocks (and others) were used by buffalo hunters throughout the 1870s, the big years of herd decimation. Production numbers for the Sharps and Model 1 Rolling Block Sporting Rifles both exceed the numbers for the Hepburn. UPDATE 16Dec2024 - deleted picture of front sight so I could add picture of top tang and receiver. Shipping charge $100 to lower 48.
