North Carolina played a significant role in the Civil War, with many battles and other events taking place in the state, including Battle of Roanoke Island. This important battle took place in early 1862 and involved over 20,000 soldiers and almost 60 ships. Battle of Averasboro, on March 15-16, Confederate General William J. Hardee resisted the right wing of Sherman’s army at this battle. Fort Fisher, Confederate fort protected the trading routes of Wilmington, North Carolina’s port. North Carolina suffered significant human losses during the Civil War, with over 30,000 troops dying, mostly from disease and battle. Very rare Confederate flag measures 38 inches x 22 1/2 inches.
