Description:
Hard to find a War of 1812 in this condition!!!
Manufactured by Rudolph and Charles Leonard of Canton, Massachusetts between 1808-1814, this is one of the approximately 4,208 muskets delivered on contract. These muskets were the Harpers Ferry pattern except they had a straighter hammer spur (top jaw guide) as on the Springfield models. The top breech area of the barrel is marked "US" and "to MS" (Massachusetts) along with an "eagle head/CT" proof on the left of the breech as typically seen on 1808 contract muskets, and two "V" inspection marks. The lock plate is marked "CANTON" in a vertical curve above "1813" date behind the hammer, with an eagle and "US" above "R.&C. LEONARD" ahead of the hammer. "V/HHP" inspection initials of Henry H. Perkin and "MS" stamped on the left stock flat. The upper barrel band has a brass front sight blade and the bayonet lug is mounted on the bottom of the barrel.
