In the late 1880s the international legend known as John Moses Browning was asked by Winchester to replace the model 1873 with a new slide action rimfire which birthed what we know today as the Winchester 1890. The Model 1890 was the second slide action rimfire introduced to the market, narrowly following the release of the Colt Lightning Carbine. The 1890 would go on to become the most successful rimfire repeating rifle ever produced by Winchester, and was widely in use in shooting galleries, dubbing it with the nickname "gallery gun."
