Description: The Anniston Army Depot is a U.S. Army facility in Alabama known for refurbishing, repairing, and overhauling military equipment. Many of the war’s 1911s were sent to Anniston Army Depot for refurbishing, rebuilding, and maintaining particularly after its service life in the military was extended. The refurbishing process would typically involve disassembly of the pistol, inspecting and replacing worn or damaged parts, and reassembly. Rebuilt pistols often feature a mix of components from different manufacturers. Parts were inspected and replaced as needed for functionality, not to preserve historical accuracy. However, these 1911s reflects the U.S. military’s efforts to extend the service life of these iconic pistols, while not as valuable as all-original M1911s these arsenal rebuilds are popular among collectors for their authentic military history. Augusta Arsenal was who restored this piece. Anniston Army Depot was who stored and distributed it, never being reissued for the war, instead was sold as a collector’s item. This Colt was manufactured for WWI, refurbished for WWII. It is an Augusta Arsenal refurbish as you see by the AA stamp on the side of the frame. However, the box and receipt show this 1911 shipping out of The Anniston Army Depot. The ANAD stored and distributed other arsenal rebuilds. The slide does wear the correct address for the year 1918. The frame is stamped with an Eagle Head S16. All the markings are period correct. Paired with the documentation and the Historian Letter from Colt, this is a good one for the collection. Cosmetically sound. Mechanically sound. This is a neat piece of history, with a story of its own. For full photo album ask us for the link!
