This is a handsome, maker-marked revolver: "WM. LOWE, CHESTER" along the topstrap; that has retained 85-90% of the original bright blue finish, with some scattered small spots of mild freckling throughout, as well as mild silvering along the high edges and within the scrollwork engraving. The captive loading lever, hammer, trigger guard, and cylinder have a mottled, pewter gray patina, while the pivoting safety lock on the right side of the frame retains about 50% of the original bright fire blue. The checkered English walnut grip has some very light wear and flattening of the points, but is otherwise in excellent shape. Crisp "TRANTER’S PATENT" markings are present on the loading lever and left side of the frame. The revolver is fully functional, and has firm lock-up. The revolver is housed in an unlabeled period walnut traveling case with green baize-lined interior. The case contains a full set of accessories: a Dixon pistol flask; ebony-handled turn-screw and nipple wrench; double cavity mold for casting cannelured bullets; wooden cleaning rod; and a pewter oil bottle, also by Dixon. Additionally, the case contains a japanned Eley cap tin with intact William Tranter surcharge label along the sidewall, a partial tin of Tranter-labeled "lubricating Bullets," and a matching tin of Tranter-labeled lubricating compound. The central compartment also contains several rarely seen pre-loaded combustable paper cartridges with Eley end labels. This is a stellar example of a rare Civil War era Tranter revolver, in excellent condition, and comes with some incredibly rare extras. It would make a fantastic addition to any collection.
