Product Description:
Produced in 1929 by the Hunter Arms Co. of Fulton, N.Y., this Ideal Grade Featherweight L.C. Smith 16 gauge exemplifies early excellence in American side-by-sidesCody Firearms Records Office records confirm it was finished in July 1929 and sent to H&D Folsom Arms Company for retail sale in October.
This elegant 16-gauge shotgun was built during a strong era for Hunter Arms, surviving the Great Depression and reflecting key shotgun innovations of the time, including vent ribs, skeet models, and automatic safeties, which continued into the Marlin Firearms Company era after 1945.
The Whitworth fluid-compressed steel process, a hallmark of quality and durability, was adopted by L.C. Smith, Parker, and Lefever and remains a defining feature of high-end early 20th-century American shotguns.
Despite its exceptional condition, this shotgun retains its original 2 1/2" chambers with full and extra-full chokes, meaning shorter ammunition such as RST or Polywad is recommended for safe and reliable operation.
This well-balanced and beautifully preserved L.C. Smith features a 14-inch length-of-pull, a checkered walnut stock, a splinter fore-end, and engraved side plates with a leaf pattern, maintaining its original elegance and craftsmanship.
Key Features:
  • 16 Gauge Side-by-Side, produced in 1929
  • Cody Firearms Records confirm production & shipping history
  • 28” vent rib barrels with Extra Full & Full chokes
  • Fine checkered walnut stock with splinter forearm
  • Elegant leaf-pattern engraving on sidelock plates
  • Tight action with smooth, clean bores
  • 2 1/2” chambers – requires shorter shells (RST/Polywad recommended)
  • Well-preserved finish with minimal wear for its age
  • Excellent example of early American craftsmanship
