It features nickel plating with ivory grips. It is chambered for the 38 centerfire cartridge. The serial number of this revolver 3399 indicates this was manufactured by Colt as a cartridge revolver. This is a very scarce revolver as total factory production of the Model 1851 Navy conversion is estimated at 3800 (approximately 2000 rim fire and 1800 centerfire). Standard barrels were octagon and 7 1/2" ("a few 5" barrels were produced and these are rarities") Reference: THE BOOK OF COLT FIREARMS, R.Q SUTHERLAND, page 224. As the photographs show the revolver has been re-nickeled. Mechanically the revolver functions as designed and intended by Colt. This is a matching numbers scarce! revolver as shown in the photos.
