This exquisite exhibition-grade pair of 20-gauge game guns from Joh. Outschar's Sohn of Ferlach, Austria, represents the pinnacle of fine European gunmaking. Produced in September 1992, these sidelock shotguns feature Merkel-style actions with double gold triggers (front articulated), non-automatic safeties, and ejectors.
Each gun is meticulously crafted with 28-3/8" Bohler Steel barrels, chambered for 3" shells, and fitted with a 6mm straight matted vent rib with a silver front bead. The elegant engraving is a stunning full-coverage Celtic scroll and floral motif with a shaded background, complemented by a sculpted ellipsis on the bottom of the frame and gold punch-dot beaded sculpting on the top and sides. The trigger guard, top tang, and top lever are engraved en suite, with gold inlays for the safety markings.
The finely checkered three-piece forend features a fully engraved Deeley latch release and polished iron. The stocks are crafted from exceptionally figured European walnut, checkered in a refined border two-point pattern, with carved teardrops behind the locks and a finely checkered butt.
Both guns remain in near-new condition, with more than 98% of their original finish intact. They exhibit only minor handling marks, brilliant bores, and excellent mechanics.
Comparable in quality to the finest makers such as Merkel, Heym, Fanzoj, Hauptmann, Scheiring, Krieghoff, and Sauer, this matched pair is a remarkable example of Austrian gunmaking artistry. The balance, fit, and finish are impeccable, and the replacement cost for such a pair would exceed $100,000. A truly remarkable and highly desirable set of small-bore game guns.
