Description:
On consignment we have a Sharps model 1859 New Model Carbine in .52 Caliber. This carbine features the original walnut stock and forend with iron furniture, and 22" barrel with 800-yard graduated rear sight. Sight is marked R.S. Lawrence/Patented Feb 15th, 1859. Receiver is well worn/pitted, but still visible at top is R.S. Lawrence/April 12th 1859 and on the rear of the lockplate is marked C. Sharps Pat/Oct. 5th 1859. The left side of the receiver is marked C.Sharps Pat/Sept. 12th 1848. Barrel is marked New Model 1859. The gun is in fairly rough cosmetic condition with scattered pitting on the receiver, but action function is very good, and the bore shows fairly even and strong rifling throughout.
This rifle is serial number 47136 - Springfield Research Service indicates that numbers 47112 and 47150 were issued to Company C of the 2nd Illinois Volunteer Cavalry in July of 1864.
