JOHNSON U.S. M1836 .54 FLINTLOCK Pistol STANDARD ISSUE Used Into the AMERICAN CIVIL WAR Here we present an antique Robert Johnson Model 1836 Flintlock Pistol dated 1837 in Middletown, Connecticut. This .54 caliber, smoothbore, flintlock pistol is one of approximately 18,000 Model 1836 pistols manufactured by Robert Johnson of Middletown, Connecticut. The Model 1836 was widely considered to be the best designed and manufactured flintlock pistol. The pistol has an 8 1/2 inch round barrel with a brass front sight blade, swivel ramrod with button head and iron mountings. The barrel, ramrod, butt cap, barrel band and trigger guard are "bright" finish. The lock plate, hammer, and tang were once casehardened. The lock is marked "U.S. / R. JOHNSON / MIDDN.CONN. / 1837" below the brass pan. Inspection and proof marks are visible atop the barrel. The Model 1836 Flintlock Pistol was the standard issue handgun of the Mexican War and continued to be used well into the American Civil War. The overall condition is very good. Patina throughout. The action is excellent. The bore is smooth and in very good condition. Original flintlock. There is a stable split on the left stock flat which is customary for these. There is a small repaired chip at the back of the lock, otherwise solid throughout. Two good cartouches remain on the left side. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
